Being a single-mother with four young children aged 10, 7, 6 and 5, Mdm Tan felt very helpless when the Singapore Power disconnected the family's utility supplies. Her husband had abandoned the family without providing any maintenance. Without childcare support, Mdm Tan was unable to find full-time employment. She could only work as a part-time crew at MacDonald's that allowed her flexible working hours arrangement, earning a meagre income of $260 per month
Under the CDAC Workfare Programme, CDAC helped the family with the following:
- Utility grants to clear part of the family's utility arrears;
- Food vouchers for the family's food and groceries;
- Appeal letters were sent to Childcare Centre and Student Care Centre to provide Mdm Tan's children with childcare and student care services and assist her in the application of childcare and student care subsidies from MCYS;
- Job-matching service to help Mdm Tan look for a full-time job; and
- A volunteer befriender was assigned to provide Mdm Ng and her children with support and encouragement.
Now, Mdm Tan's four children are happily attending full-day childcare and student care centres while Mdm Tan has found a full-time job as an administrative clerk through the CDAC Job-matching service. The family has therefore gained self-reliance through the CDAC Workfare Programme.
